Hoyt Corkins
Learning the ropes
Born in Glenwood, Hoyt Corkins learnt poker from his father. The family hosted weekly poker meets and he observed his father’s colleagues and picked up the styles. He was 19 then. Slowly but surely, he was getting ready for magical poker shows later in life.
Style
He rarely speaks and if he does, he does so in a soft voice. But his card delivery is often aggressive, keeping opponents confused. He turns up in cowboy hats and boots. He is quite smart looking and keeps detached with the help of earplugs and music
Nicknames
He has nicknames like “Nightmare’ and ‘Westworld Cowboy’. The one nickname that has stuck to him however is ‘Mr. Move-in all’ given to him by Phil Hellmuth for his shady dealings, as supposed by Phil. He has however never retaliated to this.
First phase
His first phase seemed a flash in the pan. He won the first WSOP and then disappeared from poker circuit in 1992 owing to personal problems. For 11 years, he was little heard of. It was only when his new fiancé urged him, he reappeared and how.
Rebirth on the table
He won the World Poker Tour, considered the ultimate in Poker. He followed it up with a runner up performance in 2004, losing narrowly. Incidentally, this was when he got ‘Mr. Move-in all’ nickname from the third placed Phil. He won his second WSOP in 2007. He has won more than 4 million dollars. In 2005, he came second, this time in WSOP to Mike Matusow.
Life otherwise
This decade has seen him shine like a meteor. He owns cattle farms in Alabama, two houses in Alabama and Las Vegas and a poker consultancy firm-Poker Royalty. He has not yet married his fiancée of 6 years and is taking life as it comes.
