Diego Cordovez

Initiation

When Diego Cordovez’s teacher started using poker to teach children basic arithmetic, he little realized that he is carving the destiny of a famous poker player. Diego took to his teacher’s methods and imbibed poker. He sharpened his knowledge through many poker books.

Fish takes to water

He took the game seriously in 1991 after graduating from Stanford University. He won his first WSOP title pretty early but then stagnated his account. He has however come very close to winning WSOP bracelets twice. He finished third both times. But he has a knack of finishing in the money, ensuring good enough pay. In 2002, he surpassed himself and was in cashes in 4 different WSOP championships. His total career earning as of now is 1.3 million dollars.

Earlier, when he took small risks and tried small pots, he scarcely lost. With time, his risk taking ability grew and he ventured into championships. Now, with Diego promoting the game in the capacity of CEO of Global Applications, LLC, he has little time to attend the circuit. He still somehow manages to play as much as 20 hours in a week and varies the game to keep being interested in Poker. He is nicknamed ‘D-Train’ for his plain tactic of running with the game.

Not backing potential

His sole WSOP bracelet may belie his potential but at 44, he is younger than many in the circuit and gaining grounds every day. He has mastered the nuances of quite a few varieties like No Limit Hold’em and Slowball.

Contributions

He is a prolific writer and regularly contributes to the Card player magazine. He thinks that there is a direct combination between management and poker skills. Both bring out the best in an individual and give the ability to stay clear of a tight situation. He even mentioned in his column in “Optimist” published in 2002 that he would call other CEOs and business magnates to a game of chess.
