Carlos Mortensen
Spanish Armada
Born in Equador, Juan Carlos Mortensen lived his teen years in Spain. He was quite happy as a bartender. He has astonishingly good looks and an easy life. He used to play chess in a private club in Spain. One day (he recounts it as 15th April, 1997), he played an illegal game in Spain with bar mates – Poker. He lost and that bugged him. He was determined to return the favors and that happened very next day. He recovered his money and went on to quadruple it in coming four days. In that week, he decided that he would take up Poker as a career
Shape of life
Hispanic in character and flair (His mother is Spanish, father Dane), he was strong willed and shifted sails for good in America. He left behind his parents, two brothers and three sisters. But he still maintains contact with his family.
First brush
His first WSOP final was scheduled against Dewey Tomko. Dewey had more experience than Carlos’s age and it was billed as an unequal fight. Surprisingly, Carlos won. A star had arrived. He was an expert bluffer and chip-stacker; he still is.
Success Follows
He continued it with one more WSOP bracelet and two World poker Titles. His total poker earnings are an astonishing 8.8 million dollars. His game of force is No Limit Hold’em. He is nicknamed ‘El Matador’ due to his Spanish roots. He was the first to win both WSOP and WTP titles.
Upheaval
He suffered a blow when his wife of 9 years, Cecilia Mortensen, divorced him in 2006. He had shared his initial successes in Poker with her and she would often accompany him in the Poker events. It is to be noted that she is a professional poker player herself. He has no kids though.
