Humberto Brenes is a reason to rejoice for the Costa Ricans. He has brought them fame through his finesse in poker. He is called the “Godfather of Costa Rican players.” Born in San Jose, he did his engineering and then turned full time to the game.

Father’s touch

He learnt the nuances of gambling from his father, who was a very generous Baccarat player and would forgive his friends the lost money. Brenes knew that this is not how one becomes a successful player. But he was anyhow started in his future career.

Taking the game

He was advised to play poker by his friend and he began in 1974. It took him 14 years to turn professional. He has won two WSOP till date and his career earnings have crossed 5 million. His expertise may be seen in games Hold’ em and Limit Hold’ em. His final board-finish with I. Khan is still considered a legendary. That is quite a progress considering that he started as a low profile Baccarat player in Bahamas.

His style

He carries his Latin flair in his dressing sense; always turning up in dapper tracksuits. His unique style of wearing specs over specs makes him stand out. He has never been known to lose his temper and plays with an enigmatic smile. He has little knowledge about English, yet he is well versed with poker terms. He has added the trait of immense concentration to his gift of poker talent.

His family

He has led quite a successful life otherwise too. He is happily married to Patricia with three progenies. He runs a construction company, a few eateries and Univision TV channel. He has a house in Florida too though he stays in his native place. He is 58 now and is a clear example that players from outside USA can also make it big in Poker.
